Telstar Logistics Staff: I was in SF recently and SFFD firetrucks were dark maroon - cabernet sav. color instead of the "fire engine red" of years before. Why the change? Doesn't appear to be safety related - at night they are almost invisible.

All mysteries explained. Yes, our new fire trucks are a funny maroon color. Why? The new engines were manufactured by Amercian LaFrance , and a SFFD firefighter recently explained to us that these trucks commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great San Francisco earthquake. That also explains the unusual color: Apparently, this was the shade of red used by the SFFD in 1906.

Thank you for using my picture of Austin's Rescue 28 in your site.

Good blog about the fire truck. Fire trucks have evolved just like many other trucks and will continue to do so. Thanks for sharing.
