Is it a plane? Or a snowmobile? Or a surplus Snowspeeder from the ice planet Hoth? Or a mutant combination of all the above?
Let's say all of the above. The Bio-Inspired Ice Vehicle is a custom-built machine intended for use in the Moon Regan Transantarctic Expedition, which will travel 3,600 miles across Antarctica later this year.
The Expedition Website says:
The Winston Wong Bio-Inspired Ice Vehicle is the lead vehicle of the Moon Regan Transantarctic Expedition. The BIV is an agile route-finder -- with a single driver -- for the two Science Support Vehicles (SSVs) which carry the other ten members of the Expedition and act as mobile laboratories for the Expedition.
The BIV is light, bio-fuelled and engineered to counter anything that the coldest, driest, windiest place on Earth can throw at it.
Other fun facts: The BIV is propeller-driven, weighs around 1500 lbs, and has a top speed of 84 mph.
Meanwhile, the rest of the expedition crew will travel in those SSVs, which are basically Ford E-Series vans modified as badass 6x6 off-roaders:
