Our distinguished associate Jeff Davis brings this late-breaking update on a strange vessel that's recently been sighted on the waters around Seattle:
The Jim Antrim-designed, 100-ft. long .... whatchamacallit has been on the move, this time spotted around Seattle doing sea trials. Still no official details from Antrim or his company, so the mystery continues: What is this boat designed to do, exactly? Nobody's saying. "The crew was dressed as civilians but would not say a word about the boat or where they were from."
The boat even caught the attention of Pacific Northwest whale watchers, who know an odd shape on the water when they see it. This recent dispatch comes from one of the the Orca Network's shutterbugs scouting for Orcas off the San Juan Islands. She didn't get the dimensions quite right, but no matter. The boat is apparently so quiet it went undetected by underwater hydrophones that normally eavesdrop on Orca chatter...
"...The ship was perhaps 80 ft long and 30 ft wide with the driver hanging in a little phonebooth from a high crossarm. It moved very quickly and did not emit detectable underwater noise at the ~ 1/2 mile range that it passed our hydrophones."
